More signs of change in U.S. Cuba policy???

Third item on the possible change in U.S. policy toward Cuba since Sec. of State John Kerry took over the helm. Cuba should no longer be designated a state sponsor of terrorism was the first back in March. The second was bilateral talks on direct mail and now the State Dept. confirmed  that U.S. and Cuban officials will meet  to resume long-suspended talks on migration. State Dept. said that the talks do not represent a change in U.S. policy toward the island. “Obama administration officials  have said repeatedly that there can be no significant improvement in bilateral relations until Alan Gross is freed.  Havana has offered to swap him for four convicted Cuban spies in U.S. prisons, but Washington has rejected that deal.” Alan Gross,  an American Jewish subcontractor  for the U.S. government who was jailed in 2009 and later convicted  for entering the country as part of a USAID team distributing  communications equipment  to the island’s Jewish community . Gross was sentenced to fifteen years in a Cuban jail. Organizations, such as the American Jewish Committee, have called on Cuba to release Gross on humanitarian grounds. Little did I know when I used the expression “Beware Russian Bear’s Czarist-dream of putting paw in Mid-East,” that the word, paw would crop up in BBC News a few days later. It seems that “Chinese officials has confiscated 213 bear paws hidden inside the tires of a vehicle crossing the border from Russia.” Not only that, but two Russians were detained in border town Manzhouli, Inner Mongolia, according to the BBC. As it turns out, Manzhouli is a very important town in my historical novel, “Klara’s Journey (Marion Street Press), a story of betrayal, high drama and love. Klara has to get past a border check point and guard house, the latter full of bullet holes. Will she make it?  For more, check out “Klara’s Journey.”  Pre-order http://bit.ly/WyVSWq  blog www.bengfrank.blogspot.com Follow me on twitter @bengfrank :

July 1 is the 37th anniversary of The Frank Promotion Corp. No better way to celebrate than obtaining a nice item in the June 10 & 17th edition of The New Yorker for The Writing Center at Hunter College as well as numerous radio interviews promoting  the college’s  annual Writers Conference. Kudos to Lewis Burke Frumkes, director of the Center, for a very successful  conference on June 8. Three months ago I wrote that with appointment of John Kerry as Secretary of State, there were signs of a new US policy toward Cuba. The first indication came amid reports that U.S. officials were  considering removing Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism. Now AP reports in the Miami Herald that the US. and Cuba will resume talks on direct mail which has been suspended for 50 years. “In and of themselves, the discussions are not particularly significant, but the fact that the two Cold War enemies are talking at all is,” said AP. Negotiations on mail and other matters have been on hold as the U.S. has said that relations with Havana could not advance until Alan Gross, an American Jewish subcontractor for the U.S. government who was jailed in 2009 and later convicted  for entering the country as part of a USAID team distributing  communications equipment  to the island’s Jewish community, was freed. "Klara's Journey," cited in Boston Jewish Advocate

“Here are some of the most recent books to catch the attention of The Jewish Advocate (Boston),” wrote Miriam Chava Kramer, in the newspaper’s May 24 edition, and she included “Klara’s Journey, A Novel,” (Marion Street Press). “Seventeen year old Klara is selected…to make  the lonely, sometimes dangerous journey on her own….” wrote Ms. Kramer. http://bit.ly/WyVSWq  Check out my blog at www.bengfrank.blogspot.com “I Travel the World.” Follow me on twitter @bengfrank :
